Anti-sports quotations from Richard McCormick (via the New York Times):
”The kind of enthusiasm for college games that you get in the South and the West does not exist here,” Mr. McCormick said. ”We don’t have a glorious athletic tradition, and it would be very hard for us to get into that club.”
Mr. McCormick argued that the money that Rutgers is putting into sports would be better spent on academics, technology and programs for New Jersey residents. He said that Rutgers was in ”a holding pattern” and that many programs sorely needed resources.
All sounds right to us…but of course this was the senior Professor McCormick speaking, 10 years ago to the New York Times.
But do copy and paste these words to the son, the current Rutgers president. Perhaps he will see that father did know best.
